Children's Eye Health and Safety Month

Submitted by: Maria McCuean

Info from: Patricia Porter

The new school year is about to start and all children should have an eye examination to ensure that they can see properly to learn effectively. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), vision problems affect 1 in 4 school age children. Detection and preventative measures are the best defense.  The Prevent Blindness America Association has declared the month of August to be Children's Eye Health and Safety Month.

Parents, it is time for the back-to-school checklist which includes new clothes, new shoes, new backpacks and school supplies. But, do not leave off having your child's eyes examined as well; even though you don't hear them complaining about their vision. The American Optometric Association has made a list of the things to look out for to detect children's eye problems.

*Sitting close to the TV or holding a book too close

*Squinting

*Seeing Double

*Holding reading materials close to the face

*Tilting their head

*Frequently rubbing their eyes

*Turning of an eye in or out

*Sensitivity to light

*Difficulty with eye-hand-body coordination when playing ball or bike riding

*Avoiding coloring activities, puzzles and other detailed activities

If your child shows any signs of vision problems, schedule an appointment with their doctor so they can determine if your child needs to be referred to a eye doctor. A visit with the doctor can determine if your child is near or farsighted. These common refractive errors are easily corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses.  So parents while you are out marking down your back-to-school checklist, make an appointment to ensure your child is prepared for the new school year.

Safe Food Handling

The Core Four Practices

Right now, there may be an invisible enemy ready to strike. He's called BAC (bacteria) and he can make people sick. In fact, even though consumers can't see BAC - or smell him, or feel him - he and millions more like him may already be invading food products, kitchen surfaces, knives and other utensils.

But consumers have the power to Fight BAC!® and to keep food safe from harmful bacteria. It's as easy as following these four simple steps:

·                                 CLEAN: Wash hands and surfaces often

·                                 SEPARATE: Don't cross-contaminate!

·                                 COOK: Cook to proper temperature

·                                 CHILL: Refrigerate promptly

Food Safety Word Match

Match the words in the first column with the correct definition in the second column. Answers are at the bototm of the page. For some help, you can read the FIGHT BAC!® Keep Food Safe From Bacteria brochure1 (PDF 686 KB).

 1. Two Hour Rule

 a. The transfer of harmful bacteria from one food to another. Harmful bacteria can also be transferred to food from another source, such as hands.

 2. Personal Hygiene

 b. Defrost foods in the refrigerator, microwave, or under running water. Never defrost food on the kitchen counter.

 3. Perishable Food

 c. Keeping work areas free from dirt or bacteria.

Special points of interest:

* Make sure you are keeping up with your routine visits.
*
Don’t forget to give at least 24 hour notice if you are unable to keep your appointment.
* Just a reminder that Co-pays are due at check-in the day of service.
* It is helpful if you can bring in your medications during your physical.
