The Month of Hearts and Love/ February is
National Women’s heart Month
“The new me in 2011”
Why not start this year with
the goal of making your life
healthier? It can be as simple
as making sure you visit your doctor for your annual physical.
Even though you may seem healthy and feel great, having a complete
physical exam can only be
a benefit in helping you stay healthy and may uncover issues that you can
prevent. So please call us to schedule your appointment today.
Our front desk will be more than happy to make an appointment
for you. We are now offering a very simple and convenient way to access your records online. You will also be able to schedule appointments, request medication refills, and e-mail any of our staff through this secure system. There is a one time sign up fee of $15.00 per person or $25.00 for a family.
After we receive your payment, you will
be sent an email from us
introducing you to Web View and you will now be ready to confidently handle some of your health concerns without needing to leave your home.
Isn’t it amazing what technology can do
for us these days!
We wish everyone who has a February
birthday a happy one! And may
everyone have a wonderful safe and healthy 2011!

A Note from the Doc’s Winter Tips
We have had some brutal weather in the past month and it
can affect your health if you are not prepared.
Please make sure that you take the necessary precautions to have your driveway
cleared and the ice surrounding your home treated.
Falling and breaking bones is a serious complication of winter. We
hope you have a safe journey into spring. |

Krueger’s Korner Chocolate
With February
boasting a heart and chocolate theme, overshadowing the all but forgotten
New Years' resolutions, one might find themselves in a dilemma.
When the
situation calls for chocolate, is there a healthier choice? Darker,
less processed chocolate, has higher levels of flavonoids, which are
anti-oxidants that help protect the body's cells from damage.
Flavonoids also help to lower blood pressure. Dark chocolate may lower the LDL (or "bad") cholesterol, and enhance blood flow, which can lower the risk of stroke. But remember moderation! A reasonable goal suggested is an ounce of dark chocolate no more than 2-3 times per week. What better way to celebrate American Heart Month?! |
Behavioral Health
by Susan Decker LMSW We have a new addition to the PrimeCare of Novi team! Susan Decker-Taylor, LMSW, is our new behavioral health clinician. She comes to us with many years of education and experience in behavioral health including outpatient, hospital, home-based, and community settings. Susan’s role is to support the medical team in treating your whole health because your head is attached to your body! Diseases and other issues in your life influence your illness and your illness influences how you feel, what you do during the day, and how you are with your family, co-workers, and others. For example, stressors can increase your blood pressure. Susan can help you develop strategies for dealing with stress thereby lowering your blood pressure and helping you feel less stressed.

Health and Diet
by Lisa Maroun RD
Benefits
of Omega 3 Fatty Acids in Heart Disease and Cholesterol
Omega 3 fatty acids are
poly-unsaturated fatty acids. Studies show that a diet rich in omega 3 fatty
acids may help LOWER TRIGLYCERIDES and increase HDL cholesterol (the good
cholesterol). Omega 3 fatty acids may also act as an anticoagulant to
prevent blood from clotting. Several other studies also suggest that these
fatty acids may help lower HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.
Foods that contain Omega
3 fatty acids include: Ground Flaxseed/Oil, walnuts, fatty fish, nuts,
seeds, canola oil, soybean oil, and soy foods. Try and eat fish 2-3 x’s per
week salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, and sardines.
