New Pneumococcal Vaccine Recommendations May Be Coming
Pneumococcal vaccination for adults may be more cost-effective with the 13-valent conjugate, formerly reserved for children (Prevnar 13), than with the currently recommended 23-valent version (Pneumovax 23), according to a modeling study. The cost per quality life-year gained was estimated at $28,900 with the 13-serotype vaccine (PCV13) compared with $34,600 with the 23-serotype polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23), said Kenneth J. Smith, MD, of the University of Pittsburgh, and colleagues. Those numbers were considered to be moderately good evidence for adoption of an intervention the group reported in the Feb. 22/29 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. "PCV13 might prevent more pneumococcal disease compared with current PPSV23 vaccination recommendations while remaining economically reasonable," they concluded. This is true because the vaccine license for children may actually prevent more invasive infection than the broader-based vaccine licensed for adults. While covering more species of bacteria, those additional species may not cause as much severe illness as the more focused vaccine. Stay tuned for additional recommendations as they are developed. |

Risk of Diabetes, Cognitive Problems With Statins Sparks Debate
About Overuse
Updated US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warnings that use of cholesterol-lowering statins can increase the risk of developing diabetes, liver injury, cognitive problems, and muscle injury for some patients have renewed criticism about overuse of this class of medications. Last week, the FDA announced changes to the labels of statin medications, which include atorvastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, pitavastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin, simvastatin, and combination products containing these drugs. The label changes indicate that these products may be associated with memory loss or confusion, an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and increased risk of muscle injury when used in combination with drugs for the treatment of HIV or hepatitis C virus infection.
